Julius Neubronner developed miniature cameras carried by pigeons in the early twentieth century. The patent was granted in 1908. The birds went out wearing cameras and brought photographs back. You can follow the source below. Please do that before deciding the photograph is a modern joke.
The important detail, to me, is how completely ordinary the pigeon looks. No special expression. No awareness of its contribution to the history of aerial photography. Just a pigeon with a camera on its chest.
There is also a later pigeon camera in the CIA museum. The museum says that hitting the exact photographic targets was a problem. This is the most believable part of the entire story: an elaborate intelligence operation, defeated by a pigeon going somewhere else.
