pigeons aren't real

Watch a pigeon walk and the head appears to snap between positions. Pause a bad video at the wrong moment and it looks like a malfunction. Pause it at the right moment and it still looks like a malfunction. This is how the head folder began.

The technical bulletin gives the movement a service vocabulary: oscillation, timing, adjustment. The handwriting immediately disagrees with it. Somebody has corrected an apparently authoritative diagram using the sort of pen you borrow at a post office.

There is a perfectly ordinary biological explanation involving stabilizing vision. The existing Pigeons Aren’t Real lore reinterprets that as camera stabilization. The trick is that the motion supplies the image before anyone supplies the theory.

I have put this beside the optical unit in the assembly manual. Different shapes. Different dates. Same motion. If the head assembly changed but the walking pattern stayed the same, somebody cared a great deal about backward compatibility.
